Quick Facts About Periodontal Disease

  • Periodontal disease occurs when dental plaque and tartar buildup are not addressed quickly and it begins to affect the gum tissue that holds your teeth into place.
  • It is usually due to poor oral hygiene habits or lack of appropriate dental care. Genetics or other medical problems can also be contributing factors.
  • Almost half of Americans suffer from some form of gum disease or periodontal disease.
  • You can treat periodontal disease and improve your oral health with a deep cleaning process that cleans out the periodontal pockets and removes harmful bacteria.
  • Preventive care such as regular brushing and frequent dental checkups are the best way to avoid periodontal disease.

Signs and Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a progressive problem that advances over time if it is not treated quickly.

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It occurs when food particles get trapped in the mouth and turn into bacteria that cause plaque buildup. Gingivitis has very mild symptoms and may even go unnoticed until your regular checkup appointment. At this stage, it can be reversed if it is treated with a professional teeth cleaning and a good oral hygiene routine that includes regular brushing.

Stage 2: Periodontitis

If gingivitis goes untreated, plaque will begin to harden and turn into tartar, which can build up beyond the tooth surface and into the gums. At this point, you may notice inflammation of the gums as well as redness and bleeding. Your teeth may begin to come loose as they separate from your gums. At this point, a regular dental cleaning cannot treat the problem, and a more advanced treatment plan is needed.

Stage 3: Severe Periodontitis

As the condition continues to worsen, you will notice additional symptoms including sensitivity to cold or hot foods and pain when chewing. Your teeth will become looser and you may experience more severe problems such as tooth loss and even bone deterioration in the jaws. At this point, you may need more invasive treatment to correct these problems, including gum grafting or bone grafting.

If you are experiencing any of the signs of gum disease, such as bad breath, swollen gums, pain when chewing, or bleeding when you brush your teeth, call our dentist office right away for a checkup.

Periodontal Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Teeth Cleaning

A periodontal deep cleaning is not the same procedure as a regular cleaning that you get when you come in for your bi-annual dental appointment. This process is slightly more complex and uses special tools to remove plaque buildup from the gum line and clean deep underneath the gum pockets.

Routine cleanings are done to prevent oral health problems like gum disease, whereas periodontal deep cleanings are done as part of a treatment plan to address dental problems after they occur.

Deep Cleaning Procedure

The periodontal cleaning process uses two techniques: scaling, and root planing. Scaling uses a special dental tool to remove plaque buildup from the tooth service as well as above and below the gum line. The dentist will clean into the deep pockets that form between the teeth and gums, making sure to remove any hardened tartar in the oral cavity. After the scaling procedure is complete, the dentist will begin the root planing procedure, which smoothes out the tooth roots and helps your gums reattach to the tooth.

The dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area around your tooth and gums so you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel some soreness afterward, but this is normal and should subside within a few days. To prevent infection during the healing process, the dentist may prescribe a special mouth rinse.
